There is a first time for everything and that was definitely the case when Micoud and Laborie emerged first time winners in the two different categories in the Veterans in Sports Inc Veterans Football Tournament which to a close over the weekend at the Phillip Marcellin Grounds in Vieux Fort.
On Saturday in the Flow Plate Championship, Laborie emerged victorious following a 3-0 over Dennery All Blacks. Laborie Veterans Captain Ashley Duncan led the way with two goals with the other being scored by Bobby Jn Baptiste. In the Third Place Playoff, Prophets and Kings were in a tight tussle with Vieux Fort North. After regulation time nothing was decided following a 1-1 tie. Benjamin Kida put Vieux Fort ahead 1-0 in the fifth minute only to have Mervin Myers score the equalizer for Prophets and Kings in the 13th minute.
Penalty kicks decided the winner with Laborie prevailing 3-2. Sunday was “D” Day, as Micoud Veterans and Lancers collided for the prestigious Caribbean Alliance Gold Cup. On paper this contest looked like a very competitive affair. Wrong! It turned into a lopsided affair as Micoud dominated play shutting out the opposition 3-0. Conrad Evans scored two goals with Mervin Samuels getting the other.
In the Third Place Off that preceded the Caribbean Alliance Gold Cup final, Gros Islet Veterans defeated Central Vieux Fort 4-2. The Gros Islet goal scorers were Stewart Alcide, Sherman Sylvester, Nehemiah Norville with Rafferty Nolien who was credited for scoring an own goal from Earl Jean. Jean made amends for his own goal by scoring one of his own in the 17th minute. The other goal scorer for Central Vieux Fort was Leyton Sandiford.
Following Sunday’s final there was a prize giving ceremony for the Caribbean Gold Cup Awards: Best Dressed Team, Central Vieux Fort; Most Disciplined Team, Laborie Connextions; Best Goal, Lance Powell; Fastest Goal Scored, Franklin Dupigny; Best Goalkeeper, Vilan Edward; Most Goals, Leyton Sandiford; MVP of the Finals, Kervin Samuel; MVP of the Tournament, Guy George. The winning team Micoud received the Championship Trophy and a $10,000.00 cheque and medals. Flow Lancers took home the second place trophy along with $5,000 and silver medals. Third place Gros Islet were presented with the third place trophy, $3,000.00 and bronze medals.
Flow Plate awards. Laborie Veterans who won the Plate division received silverware, $2,000.00 and gold medals. Dennery All Blacks collected the second place trophy, the sum of $1500.00 and silver medals. The third place trophy went to Prophets and Kings along with $1000.00 and bronze medals while Vieux Fort North received $800.00.
