Following a hiatus in 2015, the Jazz Sampler returns with an exciting new concept. This year’s Sampler, dubbed Master and Apprentice, pairs new and emerging talent with established music icons on the island. Young emerging guitarist Lestan Celestin will appear alongside the legendary Boo Hinkson, promising saxophonist Rashad Joseph will perform with Rob Zi Taylor, Donavan Edwin will appear with panman Aimran Simmons, young vocalist Nia Britney Alfred will perform alongside Derede Williams, and the group LOTUS is being mentored by experienced vocalist Maria Lamontagne. Emerging singer Kurtwell Felix has been paired with master vocalist Mervyn Wilkinson.
This year’s Sampler will also feature performances by show organizers Sisterhood, former Tru Tones frontline man Gregory Chabon of Song of Love fame, and the legendary Patsy Cadet who was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014. Veteran musician and arranger, Gregory Piper, will also appear with the backing of the Royal St. Lucia Police Band, which he directed for many years.
The Jazz Sampler was conceptualized by Sisterhood in 2012 as a pre-cursor to the annual Jazz Festival. It showcases strictly local talent and serves as a ‘teaser’ which whets the appetites of music lovers and helps build momentum in anticipation of St. Lucia Jazz. The Jazz Sampler is endorsed by the St. Lucia Tourist Board organizers of the St. Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival.
Jazz Sampler 2106 will be held at the National Cultural Centre on Saturday April 9 from 8:00 p.m. Confirmed sponsors so far include DIGICEL, Heineken, TAM’S Travel, COURTS St. Lucia, and 758 Crossfit.
