New session of Parliament opens

After the Guard of Honor, Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy made her way into the House of Parliament followed by the President of the Senate Leon Theodore-John and House Speaker Rosemary Husbands-Mathurin.

Originally slated for 10:30am, the Throne Speech was delivered almost an hour late.

Dame Pearlette focused on the people of St Lucia’s resilience and compassion following the passage of Hurricane Tomas in October last year.  She went further to commend the government and non-governmental organisations for their progress in getting the country back on track.

She also addressed the crime situation and referred to the Prime Minister’s infamous May 30 national address where he outlined a six point plan to curb the rising crime situation.  In the Dame’s purview, that plan has been successful thus far.

Youth was also on the agenda.  She indicated that the government will be focusing on the young people of St Lucia in this address with a view to strengthen existing organisations and creating new ones to mold them into the leaders of tomorrow.
