Shutouts were the order of the day in the second leg of the St Lucia Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) Rugby 7s series hosted by Renegades Rugby Club at the Sab Playing Facility on Sunday September 27.

Four male teams took part: Rogues, Renegades, Boys Training Centre (BTC), and Monchy Sharks; and two female teams Renegades and Whiptail Warriors also competed. The two female teams played three matches, for a best of three. Whiptail Warriors came back with a vengeance after a loss in all three games in the first leg of the tournament. This time around they defeated Renegades 19-10, 22-7 and 14-10.

A round robin format was used for this leg of the male tournament. Five games were played in total. The results are as follows: Rogues 47 Monchy Sharks 0; Renegades 27 BTC 0; Rogues 38 Renegades 5; Monchy Sharks 20 BTC 0; Rogues vs Monchy Sharks 27 /BTC Combo 5

The final standings has Rogues in first place, Renegades in second place and Monchy Sharks third. In an interview following the game, Technical Director of the SLRFU, Wayne Pantor said: “Today was the second leg of the SLRFU Rugby 7’s series designed to get the players back into play. Before this we had the tag tournaments which is a non-contact version of the game, so this is now the second leg of the tackle version of the game.”

He complimented the Rogues male team who continued their winning ways with victories in all three of the tag tournaments and now emerging victorious once again in 7’s Rugby. He was especially pleased at the way the team distributed the ball.

No doubt about it, Pantor has changed the mindset of players. However he pointed out that there have been challenges along the way. He told me: “I would say one of the challenges is really getting the whole fraternity to buy into the philosophy of professionalism and winning. I want to say once again winning is not a quick fix it is a lifestyle, so you have to do all that is necessary to get that winning mentality.”

Sunday October 11, will be the final leg of the 7’s series to be hosted by Whiptail Warriors and Monchy Sharks on the Corinth Playing Field.
