On 13th December 2021Â a delegation of 3 set out to represent Saint Lucia at the first ever Global eSports Games (GEG) hosted by the Global eSports Federation (GEF). This was Saint Lucia’s first appearance in an international multi-country eSports championship . This event was held in Singapore in South-East Asia .Â
The delegation representing Saint Lucia hail from Mos Maniakal Gaming St Lucia eSports (MMG), who is a member of GEF and the leading eSports organization responsible for a series of gaming competitions over the years such as Da Big Bang , Faded and NovaKon, all of which bolstered a roster containing both local and regional gamers.Â
In this delegation, was a lone eAthlete in Ulrick Jackson aka MG | Rickiej , who participated in the Street Fighter V(SFV) championship against the best players from the respective member nations of the GEF such as former Capcom Pro Tour Street Fighter V Champions like Dominican Republic’s MenaRD and Chinese Taipei GamerBee. Accompanying Ulrick on this prestigious endeavor were Valdez Franklin President and Director of MMG , Ron Debique General Secretary and Community Development Officer of MMG and Honorable Kenson Casimir, Minister of Youth Development and Sports.
The Minister’s presence and the interest that he has expressed with this trip, made it even more momentous and historical as again, this is the first time in Saint Lucia’s history that a sitting Minister would attend an event of this sort. Keeping true to one of his campaign promises, Minister Casimir has taken this eSports initiative and has worked effortlessly with his Ministry and MMG in making this trip possible. In addition to the relentless support by Honorable Minister Casimir, they received the support of local businesses ShopBox, Button Up and Blue Waters Saint Lucia ensuring that they met all the requisite needs covering any additional expenses that the team would have encountered on this arduous trip halfway across the globe.Â
Ulrick “RickieJ” Jackson‘s road began with his group stage preliminaries Saturday 17th, where he placed 3rd in his group (tied for 9th place overall, and just barely missed the opportunity to qualify for the Finals bracket on Sunday 18th December 2021. This was still an extraordinary showing on Ulrick’s part as this was from a total of 34 countries! His road may have ended at the GEG, however, Ulrick is still keen on tightening his playstyle and bettering himself, even looking forward to his second worldwide event in the Capcom Pro Tour to be held in 2022, as well as our local events such as Novakon. In the midst of the turbulence created by Covid-19, many sectors were left crippled, especially the sports industry however due to the nature of eSports in particular, it continued to blossom and thrive, taking full advantage of the way it connects people through technology over thousands of miles. eSports has managed to engage players on global front.Â
