The mark of thirty-eight years of our Independence has arrived and once again our streets will be showered with bunting and arrays of cerulean blue, white, black and gold. As you may already know, there is a list of activities planned for island-wide participation as part of our celebrations and this year there’s a little something for everybody to come out and demonstrate love for country!
Schools are once again at the forefront of the island’s celebrations, particularly in sports, with a host of tennis, netball, cricket and other tournaments scheduled for 19 – 21 February. That is to add to the list of non-sporting activities that have already been held across the island to commemorate our Independence.
Where the rest of us are concerned, activities such as the National Day of Prayer (February 17), National Sports Awards (February 18) and National Colours Day (February 21) are all events to be looked forward to. For the racers, events for all vehicle types are scheduled starting from Independence 4×4 Wars (February 18, Cul De Sac), Independence Drag Race Battle (18 – 19 February, Vieux Fort), Independence Bikers Super Motor Event (19 February, Castries Waterfront), Independence Auto Cross (February 19, Vieux Fort) and 3-Stage Invitational Cycle Race (February 19, Castries Waterfront).
If you’re not into that type of racing or you’re in the mood to do something different this year, there are some other fun activities like Calypso Classics (February 17), Independence Charity Food Drive (February 18, William Peter Boulevard), D.A.S.H. Independence Colour Run (February 19), Mon Repos Road Relay (February 19), Independence Tea Party & Writers Forum (February 19, Central Library) and the “Praise, Prayer and Worship Celebration” (February 20, Daren Sammy Cricket Stadium).
We’re wishing Saint Lucia a wonderful 38th Independence Anniversary celebration and encourage everyone to come out and celebrate our achievements together, as a country!
