[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Sir Arthur Lewis Community College leads the celebration of Saint Lucia’s two Nobel Laureates with artistic and academic activities by its staff and students.
The College’s first activity was on Wednesday, 24 January 2018, which examined a trending issue highlighting one of our main art forms. A discussion on the merit of the musical genre known now as the Dennery Segment, engaged staff and students on its impact on the society. The topic for discussion was “Dennery Segment: Evolution, Revolution or Devolution.” An Evening of the Arts—a student led production entitled “A Little Folktale” was held at the National Cultural Centre on Wednesday, 24th January 2018 at 7:30 p.m. The play is written, directed and performed by students of the College.
Traditionally the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College has been responsible for two of the staples of the Nobel Laureate Festival— the Sir Arthur Lewis Memorial Lecture and the Wreath Laying Ceremony. The Memorial Lecture was held on Thursday, 24 January 2018 at the Financial Centre. This year’s lecture featured three panelists presenting on the topic: “Climate Change: – The Economic Response to Disaster in St. Lucia and the wider Caribbean”. The lead presenter was Dr. James Fletcher joined by panelists Mr. Derek Gibbs and Mr. Isaac Anthony. A ceremony to pay tribute to the works, lives and times of both Sir Arthur Lewis and Sir Derek Walcott was held near the burial sites of the Laureates on Friday, 26th January 2018.
The activities for the Nobel Laureate Festival will also include a poetry competition, student debate and exposure to a genre of other forms of the Literary and Performing Arts. In keeping with the theme of the Festival “Celebrating Excellence: Consolidating Our Legacy”, the College recognizes that involvement of students is key and will do its part in sustaining the legacy of our Laureates.
