Senator Joachim Henry has taken issue with the timing of government’s decision to lift the ban on alcoholic beverages. Earlier today, Commerce Minister Bradley Felix announced that from Friday, May 8, liquor licenses will be reinstated. Supermarkets, mini marts, small grocery shops, wholesalers and gas stations are allowed to sell alcohol from 7:00 am-6:00 pm. Loitering and the consumption of alcohol at the place of purchase is not allowed.

During MBC Television’s evening broadcast, Senior Correspondent Miguel Fevrier asked members of the public for their views on the government’s decision. Senator Henry, the recently announced Saint Lucia Labour Party candidate for Castries South East, also shared his thoughts: “Well the government is really sending Saint Lucians now to drink rum for Mother’s Day. I think they should have released on the sale maybe a lot earlier to allow persons to continue in the way that they have done in the past.

“But the sudden removal; knowing that Mother’s day; is really sending a signal to Saint Lucians: it’s Mother’s Day, you can go out and drink, and I think this is not good at this point in time.”
