St Lucia and Guadeloupe women clash in rugby match

Like they did in the previous game, St Lucia hopes to out run and outscore Guadeloupe in their upcoming encounter.

The St Lucia female rugby team will play against their counterparts from Guadeloupe in a feature rugby match on Saturday May 7, from 10am on the Corinth Playing Field.

The two teams have met twice in the past, with Guadeloupe drawing first blood in May 2008 at the Mindoo Phillip Park and St Lucia drawing level with impressive wins in 2010. Hence, both teams will be coming out with every intention of out doing the opponent to establish and advantage in the fixture.

As usual, St Lucia will be pinning its hopes on veteran back and captain Renetta Fredericks along with Gezel Frederick, Sepheria Charles and others. Newcomer, Electra Marcelle has been impressive in training and prop forward Valerie Farrel, has been improving by leaps and bounds.

The team will also be buoyed by recent results in the South Central Seven’s Tournament held at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, Trinidad and Tobago on April 2. St Lucia defeated all comers to emerge victorious. Gezel Frederick was named MVP of the Tournament.

Guadeloupe, on the other hand, will be hungry for revenge having been sorely beaten last time out by a rampaging St Lucia team. Veteran manager/coach and player Vanessa Commin and her band of hardy, focused girls, will be determined to turn the tables on St Lucia.

Both teams will be hosted to cocktails at Treasure Bay Casino to welcome the visitors to this beautiful island.

The St Lucia public is encouraged to come out and support the women. Rugby is the fastest growing sport on the island at present. Bring a flag, a towel and whistle.
