[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he second component of the table tennis camp organized for the elite players concluded on January 14 at the Beausejour Indoor Facility.
The program first looked at preparation for tournaments. Some of the aspects looked at involved developing a personal routine as well as a structure to follow on game day. Following this, the final three days were devoted to the fourteen participants engaging in tournaments – seven teams of two players. The teams were selected based on national rankings, with the number one ranked playing the fourteenth, number two playing the thirteenth etc.
Following the completion of the round robin tournament, Team Eliminators led by thirteen year old De Andre Calderon of Castries Comprehensive Secondary School and his 12 year old team mate Zackim Malaykhan emerged victorious. Royalites placed second with twelve year old Samarian, Jelanie Desauzay and Zarianne Anthony from St Joseph’s Convent. Third place went to Andrew Daniels from Sir Arthur Lewis Community College and Joshua De Lima of St Mary’s College.
Calderon played unbeaten with 12 wins, while Andrew Daniels finished with eleven wins and one defeat. Mario St Cyr ended with 10 wins and two defeats.
Coordinator of the Camp, Maxime Suprenant, was impressed with the level of improvement of the players following his last visit to the island. He encouraged them to always focus on a
goal when coming to practice.
All the participants worked extremely hard during the training camp. It is anticipated that there will be an improvement in their playing performances during competitions.
