Veterans Football Tournament kicks off at Beausejour

Thirteen Goals were scored in three matches as the 2013 Veterans Football Tournament kicked off Sunday at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, with the defending champions Vieux Fort South signaling that they would not relinquish their title easily this year.

In the second match of the afternoon after a march past of the participating teams all but two being present, Vieux Fort South clinically won over Spartans 3-0. Goals for Vieux Fort South came from former national midfielder Douglas “Ti Goat” Marcellin in the 14th minute, Guy Jn Baptiste in the 57th minute and Jean “Jim” Joseph in the 73rdminute.

In the opening match of the tournament, Laborie came from behind to register a 2-1 win.

Lancers went ahead in the encounter after Gilbert “Burt” Alfred, the brother of former national striker Godfrey Alfred, had converted in the 50th minute. But strikes from prolific striker Claudius “Sal” Serieux in the 67th minute and a wonderfully struck curling effort pass Lancers custodian Villan Edward in the 76th minute by Rufus St Aime  gave Laborie the victory.

In the final match of the day, Prophets and Kings got the better of Soufriere in a seven goal thriller 4-3. Hilary Charles with goals in the fifth and 90th minutes, Simon Phillip in the 82nd minute and Sam Benjamin in the 89th minute were the goal scorers for the Prophets and Kings.

For Soufriere former national striker Jerome “Barboy” Serville in the 26th minute, Malcom Victorine in the 76th minute and Kenneth Peterson in the 85th minute were the goal scorers.

The tournament continues this coming weekend. Saturday three matches are scheduled for the Gros Islet Playing Field. From 4:00 pm, Gros Islet vs Mabouya Valley; 6:00 pm  Nyah vs Caricom Masters; 8:00 pm, BTC All Stars vs Anse La Raye.

On Sunday four matches are scheduled for the Micoud Playing Field: From 12:00 noon, Vieux Fort South vs  Lancers FC; 2:00 pm,  Dennery All Blacks vs Prophets and Kings; 4.00 pm, Spartans vs Laborie Veterans; 6:00 pm, Micoud vs Congorians.
