Wasco to Start Water Rationing

STATEMENT FROM WASCO:

The Water and Sewerage Company, Inc (WASCO) wishes to appeal to the public to be very conservative in the use of water, as the effects of the dry season are beginning to impact, negatively, our ability to maintain the current water supply level to customers. The sudden reduction in rainfall over the past few weeks has affected the supply of water from some of the sources. Currently, most sources in the south are adequate while others, such as Bouton Delcer and the Dennery Valley are affected. As such, a rationing programme is being implemented.

The supply in the north comes primarily from the John Compton Dam and the Hill 20 Treatment plant. However, the storage capacity of the Dam has been compromised, significantly, due to the extreme level of siltation since the passage of Hurricane Tomas. The base flow entering the Dam is much less than the normal volume required for treatment and distribution to customers.

Consequently, the reduced storage limits our ability to maintain normal supply levels and a rationing regime will have to be implemented very shortly to all communities in the north of the island. These will include, Bexon and environs, Roseau and environs, Castries and environs, and as far north as Cap Estate.

WASCO appeals to all customers to implement conservation techniques and minimize wastage to ensure there is an adequate supply for all users. We implore all residents to refrain from the use of watering lawns, washing cars using hoses, and other wasteful practices. We expect the cooperation of our customers in that regard, as it can only augur well in achieving an effective rationing programme.
