St Lucia displayed great grit and determination to place second in Athletics with a total of 214 points behind the eventual winner Grenada with 222 points at the Windward Islands School Games.
In the process they picked up gold in the following events: Jevon Stephen, mens 100 meters (10. 86); Natasha Poleon 400 m (58.32); Marbeq Edgar 1500 m; Shermalyn Edward, long jump (5.39 m); female 4×100 team where Gabreilla Tobiere ran a blistering final leg after receiving the baton last to anchor her team to victory.
There were other outstanding performances by the following athletes: Darren De Freitas silver in the long jump and triple jump; Shermalyn Edward silver in the javelin and high jump; and Marbeq Edgar and Walter Emmanuel silver in the 800 m and high jump respectively.
It was a total team effort with the female team placing first overall with 105 points. Shermalyn Edward was the Victriux Ludorum with 25 points.
The meet was very competitive. Team St Lucia led for most of the day but faded in the days final events the 4×400 m for both male and female. Nevertheless the team must be commended for a very fine showing. St Vincent and the Grenadines finished third with 212 points.
Following is a summary of the teams performance to date. Football: St Lucia and St Vincent played to a goalless draw, while Grenada and Dominica played to a 1-1draw.
Netball: St Lucia after trailing 1-10 in the first quarter, rallied to tie the game 27-27 in the final quarter only to be edged out 33-31 in the end. Grenada defeated Dominica 55-27.
Volleyball (female): St Lucia defeated St Vincent and the Grenadines in straight sets 25-23, 25-23 and 25-18, while Grenada defeated Dominica 3-1.
Volleyball (male): St Lucia’s game was suspended with rain interrupting the third set with them winning the first two sets 25-15, 25-11. Prior to the interruption, the team was leading in the Third Set 18-12. This game continued today (Wednesday). In another game played Grenada defeated Dominica in straight sets.
Basketball (male): St Lucia defeated St Vincent 72-59, while Grenada defeated Dominica 88-53.
Basketball (female): St Lucia lost to St Vincent while Grenada defeated Dominica.
