World Athletics Day targets youth and environment

In observance of World Athletics Day youngsters will compete in a number of events at the George Odlum Stadium on Sunday

On Sunday May the St Lucia Athletics Association will be joining the International Athletics confraternity as they observe World Athletics Day.
Now in its 16th year the IAAF World Athletics Day which is always held in May, will be observed preferably this weekend. This event is one of the busiest programs of competitions in the annual global Athletics calendar. The IAAF
World Athletics Day when it began in 1996 was exclusively planned for youngsters who were members of clubs affiliated to IAAF Member Federations, but in recent years the scope of the project has broadened to include the participation of school children in individual and team competitions. With the addition of these two new categories, the World Athletics Day has become a complete and important event which annually promotes our sport around the world.
The goal of this year’s edition of the IAAF World Athletics Day is to firmly establish
an important link between the youth, our sport, and environmental conservation.
On Sunday youngsters aged 6-17 years belonging to clubs and schools will converge at the George Odlum Stadium in Vieux Fort from 10:00 am to compete in the following events as they observe the 2011 edition of the World Athletics Day. Clubs & Schools 13 – 15  & 16-17: Long Jump (male & female open), Javelin (male & female open), 100 metres (m) (Male & Female Open), 200 m (male & female open), 800 m (male & female open).
Kiddies Six to 12 years: 80 m, 1000 m, long jump, 4 x 50 m.
The St Lucia Athletics Association is therefore extending an invitation
to all interested persons to come to the George Odlum Stadium to support the entire athletics family, as we observe the 2011 World Athletics Day.
