[dropcap]O[/dropcap]n Thursday, 3rd August, 2017 a new series of works by Llewellyn Xavier was unveiled at the prestigious art gallery at Fondation Clément in Le François, Martinique. Entitled Célébration to mark Xavier’s 50th year as an artist and his first exhibition on French soil, the opening was held under the patronage of Dame Pearlette Louisy, Governor General of Saint Lucia. Louisy travelled to Martinique for the occasion and addressed the large gathering of guests in English and in French.

Fondation Clément has hosted many exhibitions including a month-long showing of original works by Picasso and the Cuban artist, Wilfredo Lam. It is in that respect that Llewellyn Xavier finds himself among his peers.

Célébration, a collection of oil paintings, produced specially for the exhibition in Martinique,  is full of colour, perspective, rhythm and texture. The immense white walls of the art gallery were transformed into a bright riot of glorious colour.

The guests who were present for the opening were mainly  Martiniquan art enthusiasts. A Saint Lucian delegation came specially for the event and were able to witness the enthusiasm with which Xavier’s work was received.

Journalists from local television and radio stations and print media came to interview Mr. Xavier and to discover more about the Saint Lucian-based artist and his work.

On Sunday 6th August Llewellyn Xavier conducted a guided tour of his exhibition that was open to the public. More than a hundred people came to learn about the artist’s sources of inspiration, his techniques and his career that spans 50 years. Professional and amateur artists, actors, jewellery designers and art lovers interacted with Llewellyn Xavier for over three hours.

Célébration by Llewellyn Xavier at Fondation Clément, Martinique runs until 27th September, 2017.
