[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n recognition of the contributions of local taxi drivers to Saint Lucia’s tourism sector, Harry Edwards Jewelers hosted its 2nd annual Domino Tournament on September 29 at the CSA centre in Sans Souci.
Managing Director Thomas Lander said: “We feel the taxi associations are really the backbone of the country. They’re really the first people you meet when you arrive here from another country. We felt that it’s important to recognize this fact and really appreciate the drivers who do that work.”
Fifteen teams of two players each competed in this year’s tournament. The teams included taxi drivers from Sandals Grande, Sandals Halycon, Sandals La Toc, Bodyholiday at Le Sport, Rendezvous, Windjammer Landing, St. James Morgan Bay, Royal St. Lucia, Bay Gardens, Marigot Bay Resort, Royalton, The Landings Resort, Rodney Bay Marina and two teams from the Southern Taxi Association. The rules were simple: any team that won six games twice, moved on to the next round.
Following over four hours of fierce play, eleven teams were sent packing, including former champions Le Sport. The semifinals saw the Southern Taxi teams going up against each other and Sandals Halycon versus Windjammer Landing. The finals were between Francis Palton and Lunden James of the Southern Taxi Association and Hector Phlogence and Presley Patterson of Windjammer Landing. The Southern Taxi team emerged victorious. In third and fourth places were Sandals Halycon and the other Southern Taxi team, respectively
“We’ll do this every year until Harry Edwards closes,” Lander said, then quickly added, “and I don’t think we’re ever going to close.”
