Olympic Day set for June

The Olympic Day Run has always been the highlight when observing Olympic Day.

The Saint Lucia Olympic Committee (SLOC) is joining counterparts worldwide in commemorating the International Olympic Movement by staging a series of activities between June 17-30.

General membership of the SLOC met at the Bel Jour Hotel Wednesday evening and endorsed an Olympic exhibition set for June 17-22 and an Olympic Day Fiesta on June 30, which will start with the traditional Olympic Day Run.

The exhibition will be held at the Blue Coral Mall in Castries, while the Beausejour Cricket Ground, the nearby Indoor Facility and National Tennis Centre, will be the main hub of activities for the Sporting Fiesta on June 30. The Saint Lucia Olympic Committee has expanded on its observance of Olympic Day, which was dominated by the Olympic Day Run.

“This year the SLOC is proposing a different approach to the organization of the event,” said newly elected President Fortuna Belrose. “This approach is focused on the involvement of a greater number of stakeholders to create and heighten public awareness and participation in the various activities for celebrations.”

Added Belrose: “Olympic Day is aimed at everyone, whatever their sporting ability. It is an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of the Olympic Games— that we must always try to give the best of ourselves. The important thing is not winning or losing but knowing how to play the game well.”

The Olympic Week Exhibition will feature paraphernalia from the Saint Lucia Olympic Committee and schools have been invited to participate in an Olympic project to be part of the exhibition. Certificates of participation will be provided to all schools and the best projects, which will be voted by the public, will be awarded a special prize.

Olympic Fiesta at Beausejour features a series of sporting activities to engage the public for the entire day. Every affiliate of the SLOC is expected to participate in some form or the other.
