St. Lucia Police sources have confirmed the arrest of a customs officer on charges he was in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The suspect was arrested at his Corinth home by Gros Islet police officers earlier today, Saturday.
Reportedly his attorney was present when the customs man was taken into police custody and detained. The unconfirmed word is the police were tipped off by a relative of the suspect.
Recently, it emerged that firearms and ammunition have for some time been smuggled into St Lucia in barrels purporting to contain duty-free household items from overseas sources. In one such case an arrest was made. More as this story develops.
